Stari Most went into the Neretva in 1993 and came back out of it in 2004, cut from the same Tenelija stone. Divers still go off the parapet in summer for a collection from the crowd. Behind it, Kujundžiluk is a lane of copper hammered flat by hand.

The Dervish House
At Blagaj the Buna comes out of a cliff face at up to 43 cubic metres a second, one of the strongest karst springs in Europe, and a white Ottoman tekija sits right against the rock beside it. Take shoes you can slip off — the prayer rooms are carpeted — and go early, because the terrace fills by eleven.

Lukomir, the Last Village
At 1,469 metres Lukomir is the highest inhabited village in the country, a row of stone houses with cherrywood shingle roofs on the lip of the Rakitnica canyon. Families still summer there with sheep and leave before the snow closes the road. The walk in from Umoljani is the good way to arrive.

Half of Bosnia’s best days start in Croatia.
Dubrovnik, Split and the Makarska Riviera all run day trips over the border, and they are the reason a lot of people see Mostar at all. They are long days on a coach with two frontier posts in them. Take the passport, expect a queue in August, and choose by which stops you get.
